Kaltern Kellerei Cantina
History
The history of Cantina Kaltern goes way back. It took more than a century for the Kelder to become what it is and what it now represents: professionalism, passion, sense of belonging, experience and the highest quality standards.
Today, Cantina Kaltern is one of the most important wineries in South Tyrol, and the wine-growing community of Caldaro itself, the best known and most loved in South Tyrol, is proud of its fame. But Caldaro is not only a special place for lovers and connoisseurs of the wine world. Wine is the great protagonist in the life of the community: it has forged it over the years, it has given and still gives work, it fills the inhabitants and farmers with pride and for many it is a full-time professional commitment, which with great dedication is pursued. passion in many different areas, whether in the vineyards, in the cellar, in gastronomy or in trade.
In Caldaro, wine is synonymous with taste and quality. What makes the small wine-growing community with its large and natural lake and its wines truly unique is the community that surrounds it. Spreading the spirit and the euphoria, the community effort, the wine and of course the natural beauties all over the world. In this sense Cantina Kaltern plays an important role that perfectly reflects the company philosophy: unity of purpose and constant search for quality.
FROM 1900 TO TODAY:
The history of Cantina Kaltern goes back to the early twentieth century. A century that tells of the difficult events of five wineries through the war years and the separation of Alto Adige from Austria, the glorious times of the Empire, the economic crises and recovery, the mergers and the constant orientation to quality in viticulture. In the twenty-first century it became a wine cooperative with 650 members and 450 hectares of vineyards.
THE WINE PRODUCTION IN CALDARO
A push towards quality, sustainability, biodynamics
For Cantina Kaltern is not only a pleasure to take care of the ancient production land around Lake Caldaro. It is also a duty. We want to actively contribute to the preservation of the natural and cultural landscape around us. We want to protect and enhance the diversity of the soil and the entire ecosystem, and last but not least, we want to produce high quality wines, through careful manual work and in accordance with the rhythm of nature.
From pruning to harvesting
Vineyard work involves many different tasks throughout the year: from pruning the plants to harvesting, the 650 members must be coordinated and trained to make the most of the synergies. That's why we set individual yield targets for each of the 2,000 plots at the beginning of the vintage, which are then monitored and evaluated by the winery's agronomists. The quality of the grapes is an indispensable pillar for us, which must be guaranteed by all winegrowers of the cooperative. Our members know for which wine their grapes are intended. They work with the utmost respect for their land, cultivate their plots with dedication and together rejoice over the goals achieved, the beautiful wines of Kaltern.
“The beauty of working in the vineyard is the feeling of being part of a community and the passion with which everyone goes about their work. Our large family can cope with the vagaries of the weather and the most unpredictable factors. We stick together and support each other where needed. Our strength is the spontaneous mobilization of personnel. This is how we guarantee production objectives and quality standards.” Thomas Scarizuola, winemaker of Cantina Kaltern

The 1,100 vineyards are spread over very special terrains: historically cultivated and dedicated to specific varieties and exceptional wines. Soils that they cultivate sustainably, partly organically or biodynamically and therefore quality-oriented. Cantina Kaltern is a pioneer area biodynamics throughout South Tyrol. A group of members and revolutionaries sensitive to this approach are already cultivating more than 15 hectares according to this special form of organic viticulture, considerably ahead of the times. These grapes are processed in the cellar according to the teachings of Rudolf Steiner. In principle, all our producers avoid the use of herbicides.
The Kaltern Winery operates a health and safety management system according to ISO 45001:2018. This system has been approved by a globally accredited certification body and is continuously monitored.
The necessary processes and procedures have been introduced in the company, are maintained and continuously developed.
A tailor-made occupational health and safety program has been developed for our company that is being continuously improved.
