Red wine Rioja The most famous region of Spain is the Rioja, in Spain and beyond the Rioja wines are highly regarded, the area is over 60,000 hectares and at least 85 % of the wines are red, the most important grape variety is the Tempranillo . The most famous areas in the Rioja are the Rioja Alto, Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Baja. The Rioja wines made mainly from the Tempranillo grape variety undergo a wood aging. The wines can be divided into Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva. There is also a Joven which means young, these have not had any wood bearings. For example, a Gran Reserva requires a minimum of 18 months of barrel aging and 60 months in Bottle . The Gran Reserva is only made in exceptional years.
