Wines from America In America, most of the viticulture is grown in California , the climate is the best here, the most commonly used grape variety is the Cabernet Sauvignon for red wines and Chardonnay for white wines. In the United States, wine regions are classified into AVAs, American Viticultural Areas. The grape variety stated on the bottle is therefore obliged to have a share of 85 % . After many setbacks, viticulture in America only really started around the year 1900. But then the phylloxera destroyed a large part of the viticulture. After grafts resistant to phylloxera had been found, viticulture could be started again, but an alcohol ban followed the drinking of wine again, the so-called Prohibition.
