Torrevento
Torrevento
The story of Torrevento begins in the north of Apulia, at the vineyards at the foot of Castel del Monte . Here, in the Torre del Vento district, in the heart of the Alta Murgia National Park, we produce our wines according to the regulations of sustainable agriculture. Today, as in the past, rural wine production is still the strength of our company, committed to restoring and improving native vines suitable to best express the viticultural vocation of the Apulian territory.
For more than 20 years, Torrevento has embarked on a certified quality path that - in addition to the IFS Food and CSQA standards - has seen the Equalitas certification as the ultimate goal, certifying the sustainability of the company and its products from an environmental, ethical and economic point of view.
The cornerstone of our approach to sustainability is ethical; doing business in accordance with our fundamental values: territory, people, product. We have been involved in solidarity projects for years to guarantee access to goods that are considered fundamental, such as work, security, education and social relations.
To recognize its commitment area sustainability, Torrevento received the "Award for Sustainable Viticulture 2019" by Gambero Rosso.
The values of welcome and hospitality are deeply rooted in the Apulian culture. Torrevento has always been an open company: initiatives, community projects, tastings, vineyard and cellar tours strengthen the bond with the territory and allow us to convey the passion that animates our work to visitors and wine lovers
1913
Torrevento wines tell a story that begins with a dream that began more than 100 years ago, when the ancestor of the family, Francesco Liantonio - grandfather of the eponymous Francesco, now president of Torrevento - boarded the ship at the age of sixteen " Hamburg ", destination New York, in search of fortune...
1923
Francesco Liantonio sells ice cream on the street in America, creates his small fortune and returns to his beloved Puglia with the proceeds of that hard work. Here, in Palo del Colle, the production and trade of extra virgin olive oil and the processing of grapes began.
1948
The Liantonio brothers purchase a former 17th century Benedictine monastery and 57 hectares of surrounding vineyards in the 'Torre del Vento' district in the center of the Murgia area of Bari, with the aim of expanding their own vineyard area and producing fine wines rigorously from indigenous grapes typical of Puglia.
1950
Gaetano Liantonio inherits the estate, restructures it and continues production. Thus was born the rural wine cellar: "Vinicola Torrevento".
1989
With Francesco Liantonio, Torrevento Srl was born, a company that combines the passion for wine with the love for that land, the Murgia, which is too often considered arid and unproductive and which in his eyes seemed instead fertile and rich in grapes with a precise identity that could make it possible to re-evaluate and appreciate that same territory.
1992
Torrevento implements the production of high quality wines, with particular attention to the Castel del Monte appellation, which takes its name from the area of northern Puglia where the grapes have been cultivated for more than 600 years. This is how the first line of Castel del Monte DOC Torrevento wines was born: white, rosé and red.
1993
Torrevento was the first Apulian winery to present 100 % Nero di Troia with the Vigna Pedale Castel del Monte DOC 1992 wine, the emblem of this great native vine. The first pure bottled Nero di Troia in the world, its name derives from the Vigna Pedale, a pedal-shaped district of 50 hectares cultivated on calcareous and rocky soil.
1994 – 2005
Over the years, the expansion of the vineyard area, investments for technological innovation and for the production plant, and the start of the quality certification process followed. At the same time, the structural restructuring of the historic area , destined for the refinement of wines in large barrels and barriques, continues and a complete and representative range of wines of the Apulian territory comes to life.
Until today
Today, Torrevento manages a vineyard area of more than five hundred hectares in Puglia. In a perfect marriage between innovation and tradition, the Cellar follows a development plan that has always been based on research, sustainability and quality: the same values that have characterized the passionate and ethical work of its founders, to give life to wines of excellence that are fully being representative of the culture and flavors of Puglia.
