Description

Castelmaure Corbières

Tasting note:

An expressive and open nose, full of dam jam and cassis notes, and that unmistakable 'garrigue' aroma of heather and wild thyme. Lots of body and soft, ripe tannins. A great all-round wine

Castelmaure is one of the best cooperatives from the southern French Corbieres, since 1920 they have been making wines that reflect the Mediterranean landscape. A great all-round wine to drink alone or with food. Ideal with beef daube, casseroles and other tender red meat.

Castelmaure

Embres-et-Castelmauredorp is a small village south of Corbières, with about 150 inhabitants, all of whom are families of grape growers. The local cooperative makes this wine from grapes hand-picked from 760 local plots, with vines up to 80 years old.

Since 1921, this cellar has stood proudly in the heart of the village.

In 2007, the famous architects Lacaton & Vassal modernized the basement with a new extension. Since then, new technologies have followed: new press, temperature control, solar panels… Of course, the environment is now important for everyone, but Castelmaure has been living in this ecological spirit for 15 years and shows great respect for biodiversity, the planet and humanity…

Hand-picking all our grapes is the key to our quality.

Once harvested, the grapes are transported in small crates and mechanically lifted above the tanks. They are then moved by gravity to the fermentation vessel to undergo carbonic maceration. This process prevents the grapes from being damaged or crushed from the field to the tank. They remain intact right into the barrel, bringing out the best of their fruit.

Castelmaure has always worked with the environment, the harvest is 100% picked by hand. We already have High Environmental Value certification for half of the vineyard, which minimizes treatments in the vineyards. In addition, almost a third of the vineyard is on its way to becoming organic.

Surrounded by stones and rocks, Embres-et-Castelmaure is located deep in the Corbières, between scrubland and maquis. There are two roads leading to the village, on the border of France and the ancient country of Aragon, at the foot of the Pyrenees.

And the other side of the mountain range lies the Mediterranean Sea.

In the middle of the vineyards you will find the ruins of a castle that gave us our name, Castelmaure. And if we follow the path lined with the wise Montpellier maples, we arrive at the Romanesque chapel, St. Felix, surrounded by pointed cypresses and green oaks
