Domaine Laroche has been making wine in the Chablis since 1850. Michel Laroche, the fifth generation, arrived in 1967 to continue a long tradition of letting the wine express its unique Chablis origins: The True Chablis. Michel has witnessed significant changes in Chablis and is the first generation to live exclusively from producing and selling wine. Domaine Laroche is one of the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, Located in the Chablis: a ninth to sixteenth century listed monastery called l'Obédiencerie, where monks made the first Chablis
“ Domaine Laroche is committed to a global approach to responsibility and sustainability that results in agroecological viticulture.
How to define it? It is simply a method that takes into account the relationships between the plant, its physiology, its soil, its climate and the environment. We quickly see that the balance of the plant makes a major contribution to reducing treatments, because it naturally becomes more resistant to diseases and pests.
We have our own specifications, based on a few simple principles: no herbicides, no insecticides or anti-rot. The treatments used should help the plant and not disrupt the balance or ripening of the grapes. For example, we experiment with natural treatments based on nettle and valerian, which prove to be very effective.
“Just thinking ecologically in the vineyard would be nonsense. In the winery we apply the same principles as in the vineyard: inputs are limited to the strict minimum and we work to reduce energy consumption and the use of rainwater.
A global approach to taking the environment into account in our activities requires skills, and therefore also people. We can never say enough how important they are, in the transfer but also in creating new experiences. We encourage and seek out apprenticeships as this allows for effective transfer, especially when manual knowledge is involved
