Susumaniello Grape

The Susumaniello grape is one of the rarest, ancient grape varieties in the world and was almost extinct until recently. This grape is only planted in the heel of Italy in Salento (Puglia), where Boccantino , among others, makes a very nice, smooth red wine.

Wines from the Susumaniello grape are often characterized by a deep ruby red color and aromas of red berries, blackberries and plums. Richer, more concentrated wines from this grape also contain spicy, peppery aromas and dark chocolate flavors. The name Susumaniello is a corruption of 'Somarello', which means donkey. In the region where this grape comes from, donkeys used to be the means of transport for the harvest from the vineyard to the fermentation vat.
