Wines from Africa Africa is considered to be the new world countries of wine, yet wine has been grown for almost 3 centuries. Africa has a relatively small wine region in the South because elsewhere the temperatures are too high. The sea breeze makes it an ideal wine area in South Africa, the Chenin Blanc is typical for the white wines and the Pinotage for the red wines. However, the Dutch who started viticulture here and set up trading posts did not know very much about wine. Only years later did the French Huguenots appear in Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.
