Since 1754. In the 18th century, the Charlet family were landowners and wine merchants on the border between Burgundy and Beaujolais in Saint-Amour and Juliénas. This is evidenced by the partnership agreement between Jean and Joseph Charlet dated October 20, 1754, along with the ledgers of this period. Charlet wines already had an excellent reputation in Paris at that time: an interesting record is the delivery of a barrel of wine to Monsieur Gabriel, King Louis XVI's first architect who worked on the Château de Versailles!
Today, Jacques Charlet is run by the Barbet family, bound to the Charlet through marriage. They also own the historic Charlet Estates in Saint Amour and Julienas.
Whether the wines are the product of our estates, from grapes they vinify or by a selected Cuvée on an estate they have worked with for generations, they ensure that each wine always stays true to its origins and that it shows off the very best of the Terroir from which it came. They believe that respect for the environment is essential and actively promote the use of environmentally friendly winegrowing techniques and soil management.
Each plot has a unique character due to the diversity of the soil and the aspect. The wines are selected from the best “climates” (or named vineyards) taking care to preserve their individual personality.
Since Roman times, Beaujolais has been the fruit of the synergy between a unique grape variety – Gamay Noir – high planting density, poor, well-drained soils that give low yields and slopes with an ideal aspect to the east and south. The soul of southern Burgundy, the Mâconnais region is the kingdom of Chardonnay , a noble variety renowned for its finesse. The temperate climate there, with cool nights, and the diversity of the limestone-clay soils give white wines that find a harmonious balance between freshness, fruitiness and roundness.
For example, the Jacques Charlet Moulin-à-Vent comes from the Champ de Cour “climat”, which has one of the best reputations in the appellation; in the same vein, the Morgon comes from the famous Côte du Py.
In Pouilly-Fuissé, Domaine des Sansonnets is located in the most prestigious vineyards, including Aux Clos, Les Chailloux (soil rich in slate), Beauregard and Vers Cras (soil rich in limestone nuggets). It is through this unique diversity of terroirs that Jacques Charlet 's wines exude their personality and charm.
The golden rule remains to pick the grapes at the highest ripeness. Two principles emerge from this philosophy: the quality of the yield and respect for the typicality of our terroirs. Ageing: the cornerstone in making great wines
Depending on the estate and the Cru, it is chosen to mature in barrels, wooden barrels or oak barrels. Once the wines are in the cellar, time is no longer an object. The wines rest, round and mature for the time they need before gently bottling.
