Domaine André Brunel

The family has been present on the territory of Châteauneuf du Pape since the 17th century and has been fully committed to wine for five generations.

As far back as the 17th century, the family's wine-growing activity is confirmed by the purchase of a piece of vineyard north of the appellation of the Bishop of Avignon.

Many generations succeed each other in the service of viticulture, but it was not until 1954 that Lucien Brunel created the Les Cailloux brand to develop and publicize the specific characteristics and qualities of the estate's wines. We will now talk about Domaine Les Cailloux.

In 1971 André Brunel took over the operation of the estate. Under his leadership, the estate will experience rapid growth: acquisition of vines in Côtes du Rhône and in Vin de Pays, launch of the famous Cuvée Centenaire in 1989. He also makes important changes in the management of the vine by becoming one of the first in Chateauneuf du Pape to have a non-chemical approach to growing vines.

In 2012, his son, Fabrice Brunel, joined him to continue the family history.

The estate is divided into three appellations: of course Châteauneuf du Pape, but also Côtes du Rhône and Vin de Pays de Vaucluse.

The search for quality, respect for the terroirs and the ambition to always offer our customers wines that they will be able to appreciate as they age have led us to take the utmost care in their production, whatever the name.

The differences mainly concern aging times (longer for Chateauneuf, shorter for Vins de Pays to make them more accessible) and the use of barrels (for Syrahs in Chateauneuf du Pape to round off the tannins, absent on the Côtes du Rhône and the Vins de Pays to preserve the freshness of the fruit).

It is the desire to produce wines characteristic of their terroir and their origin, while remaining elegant and of great finesse.

Chateauneuf du Pape

The Domaine has 21 hectares in the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation, including 2 white, spread over ten districts. The main ones are Farguerol in the north, Reves and Plan du Rhône in the south and Bois de la Ville below the village.

The soils are varied, pebbles of course, but also sandy and clay soils.

Soil topography: analysis of a quarter round pebbles

The "useful" layers for the vines are staged over about 3 m:

From 0 to 50 cm: mainly pebbles (80 % ) supplemented with sand. Strong presence of roots.

From 50 to 140 cm: strong presence of pebbles (60 % ), the rest is mainly clay. Presence of fine roots.

From 140 to 300 cm: low clayey accumulation but always with the presence of pebbles (about 20 % ).

Due to the deep rooting it is possible to collect the water present more than 2m below the surface and the pebbles reduce evaporation by the heat or the mistral. The plant is therefore well hydrated even in the heat of the summer.

Grape varieties

It consists mainly of old and even very old Grenaches, it represents 70 % of the Domaine , then we have Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre.

Cotes du Rhone

The Domaine has about 40 hectares in Côtes du Rhône, mainly located east of the town of Orange , the rest is in the Gard, near Lirac.

Soil topography

The top layer of the soil consists mainly of modern alluvium, of the sandy-clay type. Their advantage is that they can withstand water stress in summer and thus limit the irrigation of the vines.

The lower layers mainly consist of limestone with strong drainage capacity. The roots are therefore less deep than at Châteauneuf du Pape. The climate is characterized by a lot of sunshine and an average rainfall of 650 mm.

Grape varieties

The grape variety is made from old grenaches. They are over 50 years old.

In Côtes-du-Rhône Roussanne we have Clairette and Grenache Blanc.

Rural wine

The estate also owns 30 hectares of local wines (or IGP: Protected Geographical Indication), mainly located in the town of Travaillan in the north of the Vaucluse.

Soil topography

The soil consists mainly of recent river alluvial deposits along the Aygues River.

Grape varieties

Grenache dominates the grape varieties here too.

In Châteauneuf-du-Pape they have 15 plots, 14 of which we use to make the Les Cailloux cuvée, these are different terroirs: there are limestone, sand, safres, clay-silty soils. At Domaine André Brunel, they vinify the terroirs separately and then blend them. There is only one plot: Farguerol with which we produce our special cuvée “La Centaire”. La Centenaire was first created by André Brunel in 1989, it is a unique terroir, it is planted but mainly made of very old Grenache Grenache which is now more than 120 years old. It is a very good wine that needs to age for a few years before drinking.

In white Châtauneuf-du-Pape, they have 3 plots that allow us to produce the cuvée Les Cailloux, the emblematic cuvée of the Domaine . A plot of Roussanne which was most certainly André Brunel's plot, he was often there when we were looking for him, even on weekends! Another planted with Clairette and a last one with Grenache Blanc. Our whites are quite lively, tense, mineral, they don't have a heavy profile. It can be drunk young due to its freshness, but ages beautifully!

In Côtes-du-Rhône they have the famous Sommelongue plot that allows us to make the cuvée of the same name. Sommelongue means long strip of land, it is 8 hectares in one piece. The Sommelongue cuvée has a fairly large storage potential and can be kept for up to 10 years. It is a very fine wine. They then have other cuvées in Côtes-du-Rhône: Est/Ouest composed of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, it is a wine to drink young, it can accompany grilled meats, salads, a pasta dish, pizzas, etc. They also have a cuvée called Sabrine that has a shelf life of up to 5 years.

They have 2 plots of white Côtes-du-Rhône on which we can make the Bécassonne cuvée, on one of these two plots is a house where Fabrice Brunel grew up when he was little. the name of the Bécassonne cuvée.

In Vin de Pays we have a total of 13 plots, including two plots where they can make Petit Tracteur French wine cuvée, an easy drinking, fruity wine for friends. They also have a Vin de Pays Grenache
