Castell del Remei

Castell del Remei is a centuries-old winery located on a historic estate with the Costers del Segre appellation of origin, where the first remains of winemaking activities date back to 1780.

It is the oldest winery in Catalonia in terms of the production and labeling of fine aging wines, and also the first Catalan winery built according to the Bordeaux castle model, surrounded by vineyards.

It is nourished by grapes from the estate and plots of vineyards in the nearby mountains. It is managed by its owner, the winegrower Tomàs Cusiné, a renowned oenologist, and is considered one of the best wine assemblers in the country.

The characteristics of Castell del Remei, as a wine estate, are as interesting as its long history and, together with the heritage value of the complex, form an unrivaled ensemble in the wine-growing regions of Southern Europe.

The property is located in the municipality of Penelles, in the region of La Noguera, in Lleida, about 120 km from Barcelona.

The estate, suitable for wine production, has a Mediterranean-continental climate: large thermal oscillations, with very cold winters and hot summers; little rainfall and average humidity. In this region, westerly and northwesterly winds predominate, becoming even stronger in spring. The most precious of these is the marinade, which comes to refresh the grapes on hot summer afternoons. Another climatic peculiarity of the area is the persistent fog in winter.

The soil of the estate consists mainly of clay-limestone. The vineyard plots are located on the bottom of the inland sea that covered much of the Central Depression during the Cenozoic era and are located in fertile soils with a mainly alluvial composition. The winery owns approximately 100 hectares of vineyards. The cultivation of most of the vines (80%) takes place in vineyards in the mountains close to the castle, at an altitude (between 700 and 800 meters), on free-textured soils (loamy or loamy) with an abundant presence of gravel , allowing good drainage.

As for the composition of the grape variety, it includes native vines (Grenache, Ull de Lebre, Carignan, Trepat, Malvasia and Macabeo), to which were added at the time those of French origin that Castell del Remei introduced to the peninsula in the 19th century (cabernet sauvignon, syrah, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc).

The average age of the vines is over 25 years and the vines are planted in vines, according to the double cordon system (Royat Doble), with a planting density between 4,000 and 5,000 plants/ha.

The original facilities of the winery cover a total area of 5,500 m² and are spread over six terraced buildings, built on stone, with a wrought iron structure and walls up to 100 cm wide.

Currently, the maturation rooms house approximately 1,000 barrels (50% French and American oak), while the winemaking room is equipped with thermally regulated stainless steel tanks, pneumatic presses and other state-of-the-art technical tools capable of aging more than a million bottles. of wine produced annually.

Castell del Remei carries out ecological and sustainable management of the entire farm. In addition, treatments are kept to a minimum to promote the vegetative development of the species.
