Kopke 1636
Kopke 's path as a winegrower is intertwined with the history of his location. The Douro was predestined and has become the chosen choice for the collaboration of man and nature to make Port
A trip in 1636 between Hamburg and Portugal is the beginning of a long story: Nicolau Kopkë settles in Portugal as consul general of the Hanseatic League. Two years later, in 1638, the first bottles of wine were shipped to Northern Europe.
The purchase of a farm in the Douro, in 1781, marks the transition from a wine purchasing company to a major producer.
Port wine gradually becomes the focus of the company and soon represents the main activity. Nicolau Kopkë & Co. is a model for innovation and produces and ships its wines within the same company.
In 1828, Cristiano Nicolau Kopkë, great-grandson of company founder Nicolau Kopkë and grandson of Cristiano Kopke , sided with the Liberal Party during the civil war, tying the company and the family to the business.
This commitment to the concept of social progress will be shared by all successive generations of the family.
Kopke 1836
In 1836 he was honored with the title of Baron of Vilar and ten years later his cousin Joaquim Augusto Kopke was appointed Baron of Massarelos. Two centuries after the family's arrival in Portugal, their commitment to the country's development was rewarded.
In 1841 the company changed its name to CN Kopke and it has remained that way to this day.
Quinta de São Luiz was taken over in 1922 and has since become the place where all Kopke 's DOC Douro wines are produced.
The great connoisseurs of Douro wines have always recognized this estate as one of the most important in the region, for the quality of its soil and vineyards and for its cultural traditions.
For years, one of these traditions was to paint the stone walls of the Quinta white once a year. These white walls are pieces of history that are cherished to this day and uniquely underline the Douro landscape.
Kopke 1940
In 1940, the certificate of the Portuguese Commercial and Industrial Association is signed mentioning the antiques of CN Kopke up to 1638.
In the coming centuries, Kopke will endeavor to honor his legacy, which has been built with passion over generations.
