The blue Grape primitivo is mainly found in Apulia, but we also find the variety in Basilicata. Primitivo is pre-eminently a Grape that is suitable for warm temperatures.
In Apulia primitivo traditionally served for bulk or blend wine. After serious setbacks in the past, due to the European wine crisis, this variety has fortunately again gained in appreciation in recent years, and is being replanted by producers.
From primitivo we find dry wines within the appellations DOC Gioia del Colle (the cradle of the variety in Apulia) and DOC Primitivo di Manduria. In addition, (slightly) sweet and even fortified wines are also produced. This variety has a high content of natural sugars.
One last tidbit: In 1967, a visiting American scientist discovered that primitivo and the California Grape zinfandel were, in fact, identical. After years of scientific research, it was discovered that both stem from the Croatian Grape tribidrag.
